Volissos

Volissos, the capital of the newly established Municipality of Amani, lies at the NW of Chios. It is the centre of the entire villages spread east and west of mountain Amani and is interconnected with them by a roadway.

In Volissos there are public services, community clinic, first and second grade schools and a scout camping centre (at Managros beach). From the port of Limnia (lying 2 km from Volissos) there is sea connection with the island of Psara.

The monastery of Agia Markella (the most celebrated saint in Chios) lies 8 km from Volissos. Every year, in the 22nd of July there are organized religious festivities for her celebration. At the place of the Saint' martyrdom, called by the locals 'Agiasma', at the point where the beach meets the waves of the sea warm ferrous water springs.

The Castle of Volissos, sitting like a the crown at the top of the village, is said to be built by Velissarios, the General of the Byzantine Emperor Ioustinianos. It has a trapezoid shape with six circular towers. Inside the castle, there are several constructions, reservoirs and churches, as well as a tunnel connecting the Castle with the sea and the neighbourhood of Pithonas.

Besides the castle, Volissos also has several water mills and numerous Byzantine churches, decorating the environs of the village. You can visit some of these sights if you follow the specially formulated and labeled, walking path that starts from the village, passes through the community road, crosses the old water mills, meets the church of Agios Georgios Vasilikos, four old water mills and ends to the church of Panagia Neromilon by another path starting from the water mill of Kayanda (the forth one) and following the stream of the river Malagiotis.
