THE KAMBIA RAVINE |

As we reach Kambia, we follow the road downhill that leads to the village square. Just a few meters prior to the square, we follow the downhill road on our right, which passes by the village homes. Our starting point is right after the last home we pass. As we begin walking, we observed the wooded ravine that lies at our feet and comprises our hike. We follow the trial downhill and listen to the echoing of the water as a result of the rush from the water current into the stream. We cannot visually witness these waterfalls, since the thick vegetation impedes visual exploration of any kind. The trail continues downhill towards the river and we soon find ourselves walking alongside the riverbed. At this point, we perceive a lovely, arch-shaped bridge through the thick flora, which allows the small waterfall formed to pass. The trail continues alongside the river, through the profuse growth of pine trees, oleanders, plain trees and wild roses. We come upon a second bridge and cross to the other side, thereby bringing the riverbed on our right hand side. From this point, we follow the trial uphill, leaving the river behind us and continuing onward through cultivated land. The altitude, however, that we have attained provides us with a panoramic view of plain trees and other types of aquatic plant life alongside the waterfall. We are free to enjoy the picture perfect image created by the suspended cliffs, opposite us, which perfectly display the pine trees perched upon them. The Castle of Orias stands tall upon at the peak of the vertical cliff above us. The castle also encompasses the small church of Agia Paraskevi. As we continue our journey, the trial proceeds downhill and soon comes, once again, to the river. At the point where the impressive cypress trees surround the area, we see a small dam whose rim sets forth the stone irrigated ditch that guides the water to the gardens. We cross the bridge we meet further down and proceed whilst keeping the riverbed on our left side. We stroll alongside the river, admiring the old garden stonewalls on our right and the water ditch beside our feet leading to the sea. All the while, the ditch divides the water crossing the river, thereby transporting water to the citrus trees that are overloaded with fruit. The first farmhouses come into view as well as the road from the beach. We will soon reach the sea and the wetland that has been formed at the mouth of the river. This is the end of our journey. |

The Kambia Ravine forms a unique spectacle. It is one of the islan;s most remarkable natural landscapes. It comprises an inhabitance for rare bird species, such as the hawk-eagle (buteo rufinus) and the finch-eagle (hieraaetus fasciatus). As a result, the Hellenic Ornithologist's Corporation proposed that the area be proclaimed naturally preserved. Wanderers enjoy the feeling of stroll in within an earthly paradise as they savor the sight of the riverside, the hygrophilous plant life combined with forest elements, the suspended cliffs and the water. It is recommended that the trial be followed in the spring, since nature is at its best during this season. The Castle of Orias is a landmark, which dates back to the Genoese period. It is small in size and is built at the top of a steep cliff, which rises alongside of the riverbed. The view from that point is breathtaking. As we reach the sea, we can go swimming by proceeding east, behind the rocks, where we will find a beautiful beach. |
