CHRISTIAN MONUMENTS

 

 

The most important monuments of Christian art that adorn the island of Chios are, in    chronological order of their establishment:

a.  Agios Yiorgis (St. George) in the Chios Fortess, built in 993 A.D. It served as a Roman Catholic Church and later as a Turkish mosque.

b.  Nea Moni, outside the village Karyes, a Byzantine church with magnificent mosaics of the 11th century.

c.  Agios Yiorgis (St. George) in the village of Sykousi, a Byzantine church of the 11th century.  

d.  Panagia Krina (The Virgin Krina) in the village of Vavilous, a Byzantine church of the 13th century.

e.  Aghioi Apostoloi (The Holy Apostles) in Pyrghi, a Byzantine church with beautiful frescoes of the 13th century.

f.   Panagia Sikelia, north of Kalamoti, a Byzantine church of the 13th century.

g.  Agios Isidoros (Saint Isidore) in the area of the Chios hospital, a paleo-Christian basilica of the 14th century.

h.  Panagia (The Virgin) in Aghio Galas, a Byzantine church with frescoes of the 15th century.

i.   Mikros Taxiarchis (The Small Taxiarchi) in Mesta with the beautiful wood-carved iconostas (1833 A.D.)
