The village is named after ‘Pitys’ (meaning ‘pine’ in Ancient Greek), thus testifying its antiquity. Besides, one of the names of Chios island during Antiquity was ‘Pityousa’ (meaning ‘the one who has pines’). The modern village of Pityos is quite small and is mainly inhabited by cattle raisers and a few farmers.
