Ververato
is situated 7.5 kilometers away from the town of Chios, a little further
from Halkios. According to
the 1991 census, the population is 340 with only a few houses.
The villagers are occupied with agriculture and gardening. Although
the village has lost its “old color” and the customs that still remain
are very few, it is still alive. The
center of the happenings surround the Educational and Civilizing Council,
which, with the citizens’ help tries to take advantage of all
opportunities in order to develop the area. The
history of Ververato and its assistance through all the hard times due to
war, is remarkable. This is evident by the ruins of the forts and castles that
remain today. |

Tradition
says that the name of the village comes from “Ververis,” the last name
of a Spanish citizen who owned one of the village castles.
Unfortunately, time has left only a few remains from all the
traditional buildings. Looking
down from above, the small houses form big quadrilateral pyramids and seem
gathered one, right next to the other.
Green trees surround the houses to form a circle. |
