The
Promoting Tourism Prefectural Committee of Chios has been in operation
since July 1995 on the Prefecture of Chios.
It was formed on the basis of the Greek Law 2160/93 “regarding the
logistics surrounding Tourism” and in accordance with documentation sent to
the Prefecture of Chios from the Greek National Organization for Tourism (GNTO)
in early 1995.
The
primary scope of this committee is the employment of programs that promote the
tourism campaign for the island of Chios domestically as well as internationally.
Included within this scope of course, is the implementation of these
programs following approval from the GNTO.
The
Promoting Tourism Prefecture Committee of Chios was created based on the legal
decree signed by the Prefect of Chios, Mr. George Kaloutas and consists
of a 7-member committee. These members include representatives from the Prefecture of
Chios, the Local Municipalities & Communities Union, and professionals from
the field of Tourism. Meetings of
the Committee are open to the public, while its issues are disseminated through
accredited media.
From
1995 to date, the Committee prepares the annual program regarding the tourism
campaign of the island in collaboration with other organizations.
The last two years however, it was approved that 50% of the funding for
this program will be derived from the GNTO, a budget forecast of approximately
20.000.000 GRD. The remaining
portion of the budget is contributed from participating organizations.
The primary amount financed in this budget is from the Prefecture of
Chios who is also responsible for the completion and payment of the program.
Over
the past three years, the Prefecture of Chios carried out this tourism campaign
based on a study that was prepared by a firm specializing in the completion of
studies. The results were fairly positive following the implementation
of this campaign. Within this past
three-year period, the initial rate of increase in tourism was 8% which
proceeded to 12% and 50% respectively. The
actual goal of this campaign is to increase the duration of the season on the
island and to develop incentives as well as other forms of tourism in Chios.
Regardless of the current transportation problems, this goal is gradually
being met.
Over
the course of the past year and a half, the North Aegean Region has also
contributed to this campaign. Their
contribution primarily concerned participation in domestic and international
tourism exhibitions.
As
of the year 2000, the Promoting Tourism Prefecture Committee of Chios works
closely with the development corporation, ENA CHIOS SA.
