Agia Markella

At an 8 kilometre distance from the capital village of Northwest Chios, Volissos, there is the monastery of Agia Markella, patron saint of Chios, built on the beach. The long beach faces the historic isle of Psara. It is sandy with pebbles and is known for itrs cold waters and depth.

At the end of the beach there is a trail leading to the spot of the saint’s martyrdom, where a spring of warm water is found in the sea.

On July 22nd when St. Markella (Agia Markella) is celebrated, thousands of people from all over Chios, neighbouring islands and other parts of Greece visit the area. Many of the pilgrims walk the 50 km distance from Vrontados to the monastery to pay their respects. Often the locals will share stories of the miracles the saint has performed.
