Folk art is an important aspect of Chios tradition. It incorporates popular creativity and the island’s intellectual tradition. The Folklore Museum in Kallimasia hosts an exhibition of traditional and folk art, enabling the visitor to travel back in time, and learn about culture and everyday life of the past.

Ceramics – Pottery

Armolia village is the centre of Chios traditional ceramics art. The craftsmen of the village create ceramic utensils, kitchenware and decorative artefacts and also import such products from other workshops in Greece.

Woodcarving

From the 17th to the 19th century Chios had a strong tradition in the creation of wood carved temples (Templon) used in churches. Their characteristic was the representation of Christ Crucified at the top of the templon. The most important examples of the art can be found in the Church of Taxiarchis in Mesta village (1833) and in the Church of Agios Demetrios in Vessa (1840 – 1841).
